In early 2019 Burroughs were appointed by the Welsh Government to provide Programme, Project and Cost Management and Civil and Structural Engineering support for the development of Bro Tathan. Bro Tathan forms part of the Cardiff Airport and St Athan Economic Zone which has been earmarked for significant investment and development.

Burroughs have been appointed as the civil engineering designers by Harris Pye, and are responsible for all pre-tender and detailed design of all civil engineering aspects of this exciting and challenging project. The proposed development is a Waste to Energy plant that combusts refuse derived fuel to produce energy.

In order to obtain Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approval for St Athan airfield’s transition from military to civilian rules, Welsh Government engaged the multi-disciplinary services of Burroughs. M5 Junction 4 Approach Widening

Burroughs are working with Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd and Worcestershire County Council to improve the A38 interface with the M5 J4 roundabout. The scheme includes widening of the carriageway, upgrading the drainage network, and widening the earthworks to accommodate the increased width of the road.

The Developer Services Team at Dwr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW) required the installation of a foul sewer requisition to serve a multi-phased housing development at Genwen Farm in Bynea, Llanelli. Burroughs provided Drainage Design, Principal Designer, NEC Supervisor and Project and Contract Administration services for the scheme.

London Southend Airport Airfield Pavements

Burroughs were appointed by London Southend Airport to undertake the design for the resurfacing of their existing runway. LSA have gained a commercial contract to deliver services for RyanAir. Burroughs were responsible for designing a friction resistant runway capable of accommodating the design aircraft, a Boeing 737-800. A grooved Marshall Asphalt was designed.

Burroughs are in joint venture with COWI working for Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd and Worcestershire County Council to deliver this exciting major highways scheme. The scheme includes approximately 2km of dualled carriageway, and three bridges including a viaduct over the River Severn at Carrington Bridge.

Eastham Bridge

 On 24 May 2016, the Grade II Listed Masonry Arch Eastham Bridge over the River Teme in Worcestershire collapsed while a school bus was commencing to cross. The resultant closure of Eastham Lane imposed a 10-mile detour through narrow country lanes and split the community of Eastham from the A438 and the local school. The Eastham Bridge Replacement Project won the ICE West Midlands Team Achievement Award 2018 at the annual ICE West Midlands Awards Ceremony.

Maerdy Distribution Zonal Study (DZS) resulted in the detailed design of over 30km of potable water main pipeline replacement up to 450mm diameter within congested streets using a variety of materials and installation techniques.

DSFRS

Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS) identified the need to review and remediate the drainage systems at all of its fire stations in order to comply with current water authority regulations. To tackle this significant task DSFRS appointed Burroughs following open (OJEU) tender, as the consultancy for the project. Burroughs were to provide Design, Project Management, Cost Management and Contract Administration services.

Burroughs are currently engaged as the lead consultant on the refurbishment works at Gwent Square, Cwmbran. The works comprise of upgrading a number of existing facades to achieve a refreshed urban environment for the town users, along with upgrading the drainage to align with the proposed paving and horticultural upgrade in the square.

Coal Exchange

The ongoing scheme comprises of the renovation and structural building alterations to the Grade II listed Coal Exchange building in Cardiff. The building had been derelict for over a decade and had fallen into a state of disrepair. The work involves renovating and altering the existing layout to accommodate a luxury hotel for Signature Living.

Radyr Weir Hydro Scheme

Plans are in place to harness the energy of the River Taff through a hydroelectric power scheme championed by Cardiff Council. Millions of cubic meters of water are being fed through giant Archimedes screw turbines located adjacent to the River Taff in order to generate green electricity. The project won the ICE George Gibby Award 2017.

Ballure Bridge

Ballure Bridge carries the Manx Electric Railway over Ballure Glen, spanning some 50m in total. The bridge was constructed in 1899 using wrought iron and Bessemer steel. In 2010 a Principal Inspection was carried out by Burroughs which identified a total failure of the coating and significant section loss.

Cardiff Airport HBS3

In order to comply with the Department for Transport’s new legislation Cardiff Airport were required to upgrade their Hold Baggage Screening Standard 2 machines to Standard 3 machines. Southend Airport Runway Blast Pad

The existing grass areas to the end of the runway at Southend Airport had been eroded and torn up as a result of jet blast from large aircraft. This had led to Foreign Object Debris (FOD) such as rock becoming a hazard to the safety of the airport.

Cardiff Airport – NATO 2014

In 2014, the NATO Summit was held in Newport, South Wales. In readiness for this event, Cardiff Airport identified there would be a large influx of traffic throughout the event and in order for Cardiff Airport to maintain day-to-day Terminal Operations it was decided to construct a Temporary Terminal on a disused runway to the West side of their airfield, which was to be known as the NATO Village.

Isle Of Man – Rail Crossings

The Steam Railway and Manx Electric Railway run between Port Erin and Douglas and Douglas and Ramsey in the Isle of Man respectively, covering over 30 miles. Between both Railways, there are over 30 level crossings. Burroughs was appointed by the Isle of Man Railways with the intention to design the refurbishment of these rail crossings.

Isle Of Man – Principal Rail Inspections

Isle of Man Railways operate three heritage railways; the Steam Railway, the Manx Electric Railway and the Snaefell Mountain Railway. In total the length of all three Railways is some 35 miles long. Burroughs were commissioned to undertake a programme of Principal Inspections across the network, in total comprising of 90 rail structures.
