Gloucestershire Airport – Highway Access

Burroughs were engaged to act as Civil and Structural Designer, Project Manager and Cost Consultant for the new access road for Gloucestershire Airport.

The new road needed to connect the public highway of Bamfurlong Lane to the main terminal, replacing the old access. It was identified that the old road posed an obstacle to the safeguarding environment at the Airport, necessitating the installation of a new, wider, adoptable standard route that avoided high-sided vehicles penetrating the approach and landing surfaces.

As part of the design process, Burroughs engaged with the local authority to secure the Sectional Agreements. We also needed to analyse the aerodrome characteristics using 3D modelling to identify a suitable horizontal and, critically, vertical alignment for the new road. Our involvement also encompassed the offset of drainage from the increased impermeable areas, utilising sustainable techniques to control the flows at source, before slowly discharging into the existing airport drainage.
