Energy and Resources

Natural resources are a valuable asset and worldwide energy consumption is increasing. Burroughs is developing a track record in this sector having been integral to a number of green energy and mineral assets projects, including: energy from waste plants, recycling infrastructure, land bank master planning, solar power, anaerobic digestion facilities, quarrying and hydro-electric power generation schemes. We are familiar with the planning, environmental, energy incentivisation and legislative constraints, which often shape these projects and have acted as Project Monitor for funding institutions.

Newport Dock Waste to Energy

Burroughs have been appointed as the civil engineering designers by Harris Pye, and are responsible for all pre-tender and detailed design of all civil engineering aspects of this exciting and challenging project. The proposed development is a Waste to Energy plant that combusts refuse derived fuel to produce energy.

Radyr Weir Hydro Scheme

Plans are in place to harness the energy of the River Taff through a hydroelectric power scheme championed by Cardiff Council. Millions of cubic meters of water are being fed through giant Archimedes screw turbines located adjacent to the River Taff in order to generate green electricity. The project won the ICE George Gibby Award 2017.

Poortown Quarry Development

Poortown Quarry is owned and operated by the Isle of Man Government and is the Island’s single source of roadstone grade aggregate. Set against a contentious planning history, which stretched back to the early 1990s, Burroughs was instrumental in the successful development and implementation of a large scheme yielding significant operational and environmental improvements to the Quarry.

Anaerobic Digester

Syrus Energy, working in conjunction with Renewable Energy Investment Fund, Downing, has developed an Anaerobic Digester facility on the outskirts of Cardigan, West Wales. Burroughs acted as Civil Engineering Designer, Contract Administrator and Project Monitor (for Downing) on the scheme.

Animal Waste Process Plant

As part of the Waste Management Strategy for the Isle of Man, the Plant provides a complete rendering process to treat all the animal waste material produced on the Isle of Man. Burroughs acted as Project Manager for the Department of Transport, responsible for a multi-disciplinary Design Team, covering all aspects of civil, structural, environmental and architectural design.
