Bro Tathan Economic Development Programme

In early 2019 Burroughs were appointed by the Welsh Government to provide Programme, Project and Cost Management and Civil and Structural Engineering support for the development of Bro Tathan. Bro Tathan forms part of the Cardiff Airport and St Athan Economic Zone which has been earmarked for significant investment and development.

St Athan Civilian Airport

In order to obtain Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approval for St Athan airfield’s transition from military to civilian rules, Welsh Government engaged the multi-disciplinary services of Burroughs. Burroughs acted as Civil Engineer and Project Manager on a number of projects integral to the airfield’s transition.

London Southend Airport Airfield Pavements

Burroughs were appointed by London Southend Airport to undertake the design for the resurfacing of their existing runway. LSA have gained a commercial contract to deliver services for RyanAir. Burroughs were responsible for designing a friction resistant runway capable of accommodating the design aircraft, a Boeing 737-800. A grooved Marshall Asphalt was designed.

Cardiff Airport Fire Appliances

Burroughs were appointed by Cardiff Airport to procure three 6×6 fire appliances for emergency use on the airfield. Considering the specific requirements of the client, Burroughs facilitated an extensive specification for the trucks inclusive of high reach extending boom technology (HRET).

Cardiff Airport HBS3

In order to comply with the Department for Transport’s new legislation Cardiff Airport were required to upgrade their Hold Baggage Screening Standard 2 machines to Standard 3 machines. Burroughs were appointed as Project Manager and Contract Administrator as well as Principal Designer for the project.

St Athan Feasibility Study

MOD St Athan underwent a transition from a military rules airbase to a civilian rules airport in April 2019. The transition was made in support of the development of the Welsh Government Enterprise Zone initiative between St Athan and Cardiff Airport.

Southend Airport Runway Blast Pad

The existing grass areas to the end of the runway at Southend Airport had been eroded and torn up as a result of jet blast from large aircraft. This had led to Foreign Object Debris (FOD) such as rock becoming a hazard to the safety of the airport.

Burroughs were engaged on behalf of Southend Airport to review their existing perimeter taxiways with regard to condition and legacy life. The project comprised a detailed walk-over survey, procurement and management of detailed site investigation works and the development of a design solution to remediate the dilapidated pavements.

Southend Airport Stand Drainage

On behalf of Southend Airport Burroughs reviewed their existing drainage infrastructure in terms of discharge quality compliance and management of Glycol de-icing fluids. The project comprised the detailed assessment of contributing drained areas, active Glycol operations, system surveying and review of operational procedures.

Cardiff Airport - UEFA Champions League

On 3rd June 2017 Cardiff welcomed two of the biggest European football clubs, Real Madrid and Juventus for the UEFA Champions League Final. With many players and fans travelling to experience the event there was to be a significant strain on the infrastructural network of the city including Cardiff Airport.

Cardiff Airport - NATO 2014

In 2014, the NATO Summit was held in Newport, South Wales. In readiness for this event, Cardiff Airport identified there would be a large influx of traffic throughout the event and in order for Cardiff Airport to maintain day-to-day Terminal Operations it was decided to construct a Temporary Terminal on a disused runway to the West side of their airfield, which was to be known as the NATO Village.

Isle of Man Airport Radar

The Isle of Man Airport, as a part of an on-going programme of redevelopment were required to replace the secondary surveillance Radar System, which had reached the end of its useful life. The Airport decided that they would take the opportunity to replace their aging Primary Surveillance Radar System at the same time. Burroughs acted as Contact Administrator and provided Cost Management for the project.

Cardiff Airport - Terminal Developments

Cardiff Airport set out to improve the Customer experience at the Airport. In order to do this they identified certain key areas of the Airport that could be improved. One area identified was the Central Search Area. It was agreed that this would need reconfiguration and refurbishment with the aim of making it more customer friendly and improving the speed of the overall screening process.

Cardiff Airport - Infrastructure Project

Following the purchase of Cardiff Airport by the Welsh Government, Cardiff Airport has embarked on a series of improvements designed to improve the passenger experience and to encourage more travellers to make Cardiff Airport their Airport of choice. Part of the improvements involved the re-configuration of the internal road network to provide improved passenger access to the Airport and car parks.
