Radyr Weir Hydro Scheme

Plans are in place to harness the energy of the River Taff through a hydroelectric power scheme championed by Cardiff Council. Millions of cubic meters of water are being fed through giant Archimedes screw turbines located adjacent to the River Taff in order to generate green electricity.

Cardiff Council secured planning permission for the scheme and Dawnus Construction Limited was the Contractor charged with delivering this cutting edge scheme. Burroughs acted as Principal Designer for Dawnus Construction Limited on a design and build basis.

Burroughs used the latest modelling software Autodesk Revit to construct a digital three dimensional,  intelligent model and worked within a collaborative design team embracing the practical concept of  BIM. This approach proved instrumental in supporting the Contractor’s assessment of buildability and clash detection. Burroughs was delighted to be part of the Team, which also included Renewables First, contributing to this exciting green energy scheme.

The Radyr Weir Hydro Scheme won the ICE Wales George Gibby Award 2017.
