The Integration and Recycling of the Island’s Sewage is a scheme to modernise the collection, transfer and treatment of domestic and industrial sewage from all over the Isle of Man. Burroughs acted as both Project Manager and Client Representative for the entire scheme and Designer for substantial elements of the infrastructure.

The scheme is based on a single treatment facility on the east coast, which requires 200km of pumped rising main and 50 pumping stations to deliver the sewage for treatment. The system provides a state-of-the art treatment process with all transfer infrastructures linked via an optic fibre network to a central control facility.

Each pump station is equipped with odour control systems and computer controlled automatic pump operation. The treatment plant produces a pasteurised sludge which is used as agricultural fertiliser.
